Attendance/Participation

Attendance WILL be taken EVERY CLASS, and will be considered in the "class-participation" part of your grade. You have to come to class, and you have to come prepared; this is especially important for a class that meets only four times. For each missed class you get a ZERO for participation. This adds up very quickly, and there's no making up participation. If you do have a valid (this means overwhelming and exceptional) reason for your absence you may be able to make up a missed test. But for any absence to be considered "excused" you must tell me in advance. If you wake up sick or have some family emergency, call me at home and leave a message. There's no excuse for not notifying me in advance of an absence.

Participation requires preparation. You must read the chapters assigned for each class before the class. Each class students will be chosen at random to report on the day's readings, either to summarize a point or answer a prepared question. You must do the reading to be prepared for this.

Homework

Completed homework is also important in your grade. Homework is discounted 50% if it's late. This is bad, but it's still a lot better than not turning it in at all and getting a big fat zero.

Tests

You must use a pencil (or something else erasable) on all tests. If I can't read what you write or easily tell what you're trying to say, it's WRONG. If you miss a test, you get a zero. Again, special exceptions can be made for real live crises, emergencies, family tragedies, etc. on a case-by-case basis but, again, only if you contact me in advance of your absence and only if it is indeed an extraordinary circumstance.
